A stress test is a non-invasive medical procedure that is used to assess how your heart performs under stress. It is a common test that is used to diagnose coronary artery disease (CAD), which is a condition in which the arteries that supply blood to the heart are narrowed or blocked.

Why would I need a stress test?

There are a number of reasons why your doctor might recommend a stress test, including:

  • To diagnose coronary artery disease (CAD)
  • To assess the risk of heart attack in people with CAD
  • To monitor the effectiveness of heart disease treatments
  • To evaluate your heart function before and after surgery
  • To determine if you are able to exercise safely

What happens during a stress test?

A stress test is typically performed in a doctor’s office or hospital. You will be asked to wear comfortable clothing and shoes. You will also be asked to remove any jewelry or other metal objects from your body.

Once you are ready, you will be attached to an electrocardiogram (EKG) machine. The EKG machine will record your heart rate and rhythm throughout the test. You will also be asked to wear a blood pressure cuff.

The stress test will begin with you resting on a treadmill or stationary bike. The speed and incline of the treadmill or bike will be gradually increased as you exercise. You will be encouraged to exercise until you reach your target heart rate or until you experience symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, or dizziness.

What are the risks of a stress test?

Stress tests are generally safe, but there are a few potential risks, including:

  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness
  • Fainting
  • Heart attack (very rare)

If you experience any symptoms during a stress test, the test will be stopped immediately.
